Updating Your Skin Care Routine for Fall

Updating Your Skin Care Routine for Fall

As fall sets in, it’s essential to adjust your skin care routine because your skin experiences different changes due to seasonality. If you are living in a subtropical climate like coastal South Carolina, seasonal skin changes can pose a significant challenge. The weather can be unpredictable, but there are ways to protect your skin and keep it healthy Updating Your Skin Care Routine for Fall.

1. Combat dryness and dehydration from lower humidity

As the temperature drops, so does the humidity level, leading to dry and dehydrated skin. You might feel your skin becoming tight or itchy due to a lack of moisture. To combat this problem, use a hydrating moisturizer that locks in moisture for up to 24 hours. Also, make sure you drink enough water and boost the humidifier in your space to keep your skin healthy and hydrated.

2. Rain and winds cause redness, inflammation and irritation

During fall, we experience more rain and cool wind, which can irritate our skin. You might notice your skin turning red or becoming inflamed. To protect your skin, wear a hat, scarf or some form of protection on your exposed skin, or use a fragrance-free moisturizer to calm your skin down. You can also apply a product with soothing ingredients like chamomile or green tea that helps reduce inflammation.

3. Skin produces more sebum in response to lower humidity which = Breakouts

Fall can be the worst time for acne-prone skin. As your skin experiences more dryness and dehydration, it tries to compensate by producing more oil. This leads to congested pores, which eventually turn into breakouts. To prevent acne, use a gentle cleanser and switch to a moisturizer that’s lighter in ingredients like vitamin C and niacinamide. They help reduce inflammation and brighten up your skin.

4. Continue sunscreen routine

One thing to keep in mind is the importance of using sunscreen all year round. The sun’s UV rays are always present, even on cloudy days. Make sure to use a sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF. You can also opt for a moisturizer with sunscreen, which takes care of both steps of skincare and sunscreen protection.

5. Hydrate from inside out

Water is essential for your body to function correctly, including your skin. With the change of season, your body may need a bit more hydration. You can add more leafy greens, fruits and vegetables to your diet, which helps hydrate your skin. You can also find a skincare product with hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which holds in water molecules and keeps your skin hydrated.

6. Switch to thicker creams and moisturizers for both face and body

As fall arrives, your skin needs thicker creams and moisturizers to keep it hydrated. You can switch to a body lotion that’s rich in shea butter, cocoa butter or almond oil. For your face, use a cream with ceramides or peptides to help restore the skin barrier and lock in hydration.

7. Use facial oils

Oil is one of the best ingredients to lock in hydration and nourish your skin. There’s a common misconception that oil only leads to breakouts, but that’s not true. You can use facial oil in your skincare routine to hydrate and moisturize your skin. You can opt for an oil with jojoba oil, rosehip oil, chamomile oil or a combination of oils.

Fall is a time to transition and rejuvenate your skin for the upcoming winter season. Updating your skincare routine might require a bit of trial and error, but it’s worth it.
